Even once you’ve completed your recovery, you’ll find that it can be very beneficial for your body to build some rest days into your workout regimen. Here are just a few examples of some of the advice you’ll likely receive from a trainer or physician about resting your body:
- Rest at least one day per week: Keep in mind that your rest day shouldn’t be an “active recovery” day. You shouldn’t hit the pool or just cut down on your normal workout—it should involve little physical activity. At the most, you can give yourself a session with the foam roller, or take a walk around your neighborhood. You shouldn’t be focused on getting your heart rate up—your body needs a break.
- Schedule easy days after rest days: There’s no way of getting around the fact that the day after a rest day is going to be tough, especially if you’re going through an injury recovery process. This is why it can be beneficial to build an easy day into your routine after a rest day to help you get back up to speed.
- Don’t change your diet on rest days: If you’ve got yourself on a strict eating plan, you shouldn’t cut down on your food intake or change your diet just because it’s a rest day. Now, a cheat day here and there is generally a good idea just for self-care purposes, but you shouldn’t feel like you have to change up the way you fuel yourself just because it’s a rest day. Your body needs the rest day to repair itself, but it also needs the same sort of fuel it’s been getting, and that includes high-quality protein and plenty of fruits and veggies.
- Rest days should also free you from other forms of stress: When we talk about rest days, we’re generally talking about eliminating physical stress from your day. However, it can be just as beneficial for your body physically to remove some mental and emotional forms of stress on those days as well. Many of us live stressful everyday lives, with work, family issues and plenty of other concerns that occupy our headspace. As much as possible, try to give yourself a break on these rest days, and at least cut out a few of the many responsibilities you have.
